Theory of Mind (ToM) is a cognitive capacity that refers to the ability to infer and understand the mental states of others – such as their beliefs, desires, intentions, and emotions – and to predict their behavior based on these inferences.
Development in Children
ToM typically develops in human children around the ages of 3 to 5. This is often tested through false-belief tasks, such as the classic “Sally-Anne Test”. This test probes a child’s understanding that others can hold beliefs that differ from reality and their own beliefs.
Neurobiological Bases
Neuroscientific studies point to several areas of the brain associated with ToM, such as the medial prefrontal cortex, the temporo-parietal junction, and the superior temporal sulcus. These areas, collectively referred to as the “mentalizing network”, are often active when individuals engage in tasks requiring the understanding of others’ mental states.
